Nome Offshore Gold Dredging & History Boat Tour
An insider’s 1.5-hour ocean excursion into Nome’s gold rush history, modern Bering Sea suction dredging, and the realities of running a commercial gold operation—guided by the operators of the M/V Eroica gold dredge.
Experience Bering Sea Gold Mining From an Active Operator
Nome was built on the richest beach placer gold strike in American history. In 1899, over 20,000 prospectors lined these exact shores after discovering gold in the beach sands. It didn't take long for miners to realize that if gold was in the surf, an ancient, untouched paystreak sat directly on the ocean floor.
Departing directly from Nome Small Boat Harbor, our 1.5-hour coastal run on the Orso takes you along the famous Front Street beach and active offshore mining grounds. You’ll get an authentic, behind-the-scenes breakdown of how ocean mining evolved—from 1905 hardhat divers cutting holes through sea ice to modern high-powered suction dredges working the Bering Sea floor today.
What You’ll Experience on the Water
The Beach Gold: View Front Street and the Snake River entrance the way we view it: from offshore. Learn how the tundra rivers and ocean storms concentrate heavy gold into coastal sands, which resulted in the Nome Gold Rush in 1899 and still causes mini gold rushes today.
The Modern Dredge Fleet: Cruise past active offshore mining tracts. Learn how different rigs operate—from diver-operated suction dredges to heavy mechanical excavator barges.
The Business of Bering Sea Gold: Hear raw, authentic insights into what it actually takes to make a living dredging gold from the ocean floor. We’ll discuss state leases, operating challenges, the pros and cons of the diver dredge model, and what separates the winners from the losers in this crazy business.
The Pioneers of Offshore Mining: Discover the origins of underwater mining, including early 1900s pioneers like Captain Henry Finch who dropped down through winter pack ice in heavy canvas diving gear to test the ocean bed.
